Local businessman and good friend Brendon Main has always inspired me in his entrepreneurial ways. Brendon and I have collaborated in quite a few events in and around East London. Thistlewoods in Gonubie is one of Brendons main businesses where he offers a stunning venue for Weddings, Conferencing and Functions.
I always knew that Brendon was a machine runner, he started speaking about entering the Comrades Marathon a few months back and I didn’t think much of it until I saw his post on Facebook (Post Below) and saw how much this prestigious event meant to him (Kinda reminded me of my growing up dreams travelling to famous surf destinations)
Brendon’s Facebook Post after he completed the Comrades Marathon:
Finally I did it! With tears in my eyes I finally signed up for the comrades marathon. I knew that this would take enormous self discipline, determination, sacrifice and courage. I was no longer going to watch it from the sofa as I have done since a little boy but was eventually going to experience the Ultimate Human Race. For 25 years I have had this inner battle with myself to run the comrades and every year my mind aswell as life circumstances have always gotten the better of me..Its so easy to put things off, especially something as daunting as Comrades. It’s scary and seems impossible that anyone could run a distance of 88km, especially me. I suppose its for this reason that it took so long to get off the couch and enter.
Life has not been easy the past 10 years and certainly not turned out like I thought it would. Dreams have been shattered, relationships have failed and people have let me down.
And along comes Comrades and through all the training and preparation I start finding myself again. The past hurts and dissapointments are a distant past. There is purpose once again. I start believing that anything is possible. Nothing will stop me. I am focussed.
Lining up the start was as emotional as it gets. Tears were rolling down my face. I had made it to the start. Nothing can describe the feeling. The early morning training, the aching body, the sore legs…its all so worth it.
As I set off for Pietermaritzburg I had one goal in mind..Finish what you started. It was incredibly tough. I have never experienced HILLS like this…ever…they are long, steep and never ending…
I knew my mind and determination would carry me to the end….and it did..
I was fortunate to have my dear children, Jarryd and Kelly support me along the way, at times even running along side me. Man, was I proud!
Once again, tears rolled down my face as I crossed the finish line. I have just completed my first Comrades. Wow!
Thank you Comrades for letting me find myself again.
Till next year.
